Module 7A: Sensory Corners and ‘Sensory on a Shoestring’
A sensory corner is a smaller space, which is part of a bigger space, such as a classroom. This space can be very personalised to the learners in your classroom and to the themes and topics you are working upon. Equipment in a sensory corner is usually ‘cheap and cheerful’ sensory resources, which are low cost and easy to change or replace. A sensory corner may also have a bubble tube or fibre optics. The sensory stimuli may be less easy to control, as it is part of a larger space.
Key Points
- A sensory corner is a smaller area often within a bigger space offering less controlled opportunities for sensory stimulation/learning opportunities
- A sensory corner may be themed to compliment a sensory story or curriculum theme
- A sensory corner may provide an ‘escape’ for a learner to refocus within the classroom
Thinking Point
Would a sensory corner benefit the learners in your classroom? Could you set one up? If so, where?
