Module 5B: Completing the Environmental Audit

To complete the audit, you are asked to rate different aspects of the environment, giving each a score from 1 to 5, where 1 is the lowest rating and 5 is the highest.

It is based on what you observe in the environment that you are auditing. Some sections may not be relevant to this environment and you can omit these.

Ticking each relevant section of the audit produces a graph, which is clear to interpret. The higher up the graph you are, the more autism/sensory friendly your space is. Areas for improvement are those with lower scores.

Remember that this environmental audit may produce different results for the same learning space at different times of the day, or in different seasons.

This might be an opportunity to work together as a team, to assess how the learning environment works for everyone in it - staff and learners alike.

Key Points

  • The environmental audit is a simple tick chart, rating aspects of the environment from 1 to 5, based on a description for each rating
  • This will identify areas which positively promote learning for those learners with sensory issues and/or autism
  • This will identify areas which create a barrier to successful learning or those learners with sensory issues and/or autism

Thinking Point

Can you identify a learning space to complete an environmental audit for? What do you think it will show? Now complete it.
