Module 1A: Our Sensory Systems

Our senses are extremely important and play a vital role in living and learning.

Our sensory system is made up of seven senses, which are:

  • Vision
  • Hearing
  • Smell
  • Taste
  • Touch
  • Vestibular – the ability to feel movement and balance
  • Proprioception – the ability to understand body position relative in space

In this resource, we will refer to both the proprioceptive and vestibular senses as movement.

Each of our senses reinforce each other, giving us more detailed information together than we would receive from just one sense. As we grow, we become able to regulate the sensory information we receive. Together, they enable us to understand and interact in and with our environment.

Key Points

  • We have seven senses.
  • Our senses enable us to understand and interact in our environment which is vital for living and learning
  • Our senses reinforce each other, giving us more detailed information together than we would receive from just one
  • sense

Thinking Point

Think of a young person you work with. What information might they receive from their different senses when they first come into a particular environment in their school e.g. your classroom or the school reception?
