Module 3B: Common and Unusual Visual Conditions
The common visual conditions the learners in your class may present include low vision/blind, juvenile macular degeneration, cortical visual condition, diabetic retinopathy, astigmatism, cataracts, nystagmus, squint, long-sightedness and shortsightedness.
The more unusual visual conditions include glaucoma, albinism, retinosa pigmentosa, retinopathy of prematurity and retinoblastoma.
It is important to remember that whether these conditions are common or unusual, they are often difficult to identify in learners with SEND. Some learners in your class may have an unidentified, or undiagnosed, visual condition. Therefore, it’s important to have this understanding.
Key Points
- There are common and unusual types of visual condition
- The effects of a visual condition may vary from learner to learner
