Module 4C: Using a Sensory Profile and Protective and Positive Strategies
There are many strategies that you might use to personalise a learner’s learning experience based upon their sensory profile.
It is vital to use ‘protective’ and ‘positive’ strategies appropriately for different learners to help us personalise the learning experience safely:
- To protect learners from sensory input that is painful, anxiety provoking or disliked
- To offer positive sensory experiences that the learner finds motivating, rewarding and enjoyable
- By identifying activities that a learner with sensory needs actively avoids or seeks out, we can understand more about them
The documents below and video provide further information and strategies.

Key Points
- The information from a learner’s sensory profile means we can modify the classroom or learning environment to support learning
- We can identify and provide activities that a learner enjoys and remove/reduce activities a learner dislikes
