Module 2D: Multisensory Maths
Multisensory learning is not just for literacy and to support storytelling, it can support any subjects including Maths.
For learners with issues such as dyscalculia, as well as a range of other learning and sensory challenges, multisensory learning is particularly powerful.
There are a whole host of multisensory strategies, tools and games that can be used to help to support Maths.
A few multisensory suggestions to support these are included in this resource, particularly ones which feature the use of LGfL resources, but more specialist training and advice can help you find the best multisensory approaches to support your learners.
Supportive LGfL Resources
- www.widgit.lgfl.net – Widgit symbols to support Maths and Science (see Widgit Activities and for specific resources)
- www.mathsraps.lgfl.net – Raps to support understanding of mathematical concepts
- www.ve12.lgfl.net, www.ve34.lgfl.net, www.ve56.lgfl.net – Virtual Science experiments including sound, visuals, animation and movement
Key Points
- Multisensory learning can support Maths and helps make it concrete, particularly for learners with issues such as dyslexia and dyscalculia
- Many LGL resources can be used to support multisensory Maths
Thinking Point
Look at the presentation and associated LGfL resources to support multisensory Maths. How can you use these strategies or tools to support one of your activities or interventions for a learner or group of learners you work with?
